What visitors see, by region
One banner that follows the law where each visitor is. You don't pick regions: we read each visitor's location on every visit.
We recommend
Leave it to us.
Each region's rules are built in. The preview on the Banner page shows each region, so you can check what a visitor there sees.
You don't need to change anything here. The one regional switch, the UK statistics exception, is off unless you want it.
When you'd choose otherwise
- The UK statistics exception (UK only, off by default): analytics runs for UK visitors until they object, and the banner still shows. Turn it on only if your counsel agrees your analytics qualifies.
- A visitor from a country with no privacy law about trackers gets the US rules. A visitor whose location we can't tell gets Germany's rules, the strictest we have, because they may be in Europe.
What visitors see, region by region
- UK
- A banner on the first visit. Nothing optional runs until they choose.
- EU and EEA
- As the UK. Every EU country except Germany, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. In Italy a close X refuses; in France and Ireland a choice is asked again within 6 months.
- Germany
- As the EU, and your Impressum link shows on the banner.
- California
- No banner up front. Trackers run until the visitor says no, through a small Your Privacy Choices button that stays on the page.
- Other US states
- As California. Only the privacy signal differs from state to state (next row).
- Browser sends the privacy signal (GPC)
- In California, Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Minnesota, Oregon, Delaware, Nebraska and Maryland, it counts as a no to everything optional. The same when we can't tell a US visitor's state.
- Brazil
- As the UK: a banner on the first visit, nothing optional until they choose.
- Everywhere else
- As the US outside California. Switzerland, Quebec, China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Vietnam get the UK's banner, and a visitor we can't place gets Germany's.
