The privacy signal (GPC)
Global Privacy Control is a setting in some browsers and extensions that tells every site the visitor doesn't want their data sold or shared.
We recommend
Nothing to set: we honour it wherever the law makes it binding.
There it counts as a no to everything optional. We record it once as the visitor's decision, and their privacy choices say it was honoured.
You don't need to change this: there is no switch.
When you'd choose otherwise
- In US states whose law doesn't make the signal binding, we don't treat it as a no. Visitors there can still say no in one click.
- In the UK, the EU, Germany and Brazil, optional trackers already wait for a yes, so the signal changes nothing.
What visitors see, region by region
- UK
- Changes nothing: optional trackers already wait for a yes.
- EU and EEA
- As the UK.
- Germany
- As the UK.
- California
- Honoured: a no to everything optional, with no banner needed.
- Other US states
- Honoured in Colorado, Connecticut, Texas, Montana, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Minnesota, Oregon, Delaware, Nebraska and Maryland, and when we can't tell the state. Elsewhere, not treated as a no.
- Browser sends the privacy signal (GPC)
- Where it is honoured, their privacy choices show that the signal was honoured, and nothing optional runs.
- Brazil
- As the UK.
- Everywhere else
- Not treated as a no, as in US states without the rule. Where the banner asks first, it changes nothing.
